My heart gets sad...sad I tell ya when I think about older women not having younger women in their lives.
I know...I'm well aware I'm THAT lady...the one who won't stop talking about mentoring...blah, blah, blah.
Sorry.
It's just...it's wonderful to obey the Lord and train younger women.
We're supposed to do that. At first, I thought opening up my life to younger women would be a pain. What was wrong with me? Now...I see how this is just another area I was deceived. God wasn't being mean to me, asking me to mentor younger women. He was wanting good for me, and I was afraid to trust Him. Silly me.
Sure...college girls can be really goofy about a lot of things. I've said many times to girls in my life..."What the heck is wrong with you?" BUT they are also really smart about a lot of things and challenge me like nobody's business.
They have questions about everything...which translates into there not being many areas in my life that I haven't had to question.
Good stuff comes from having your life analyzed by sweet college eyes, and therefore doing some soul searching of your own heart and life.
I live much more purposefully because of these younger girls.
So...that's why I love them spiritually.
It kills me...and I mean that...when I hear people talk about college students like they are annoying. One time, one of my FAVORITE pastors I listen to online said something like..."Come to the Sunday morning service. There are no college students there. It's great."
What?
If we said that about any other group in the church, we'd be in serious trouble. Can you imagine...
"Come to the Saturday night service...there aren't any dumb people there."
I had to work really hard to move past that and still love listening to that guy teach. It only took like a minute to move on, since he's pretty funny and I learn a lot when he speaks.
Alright...I'll quit meddlin'.
All that to say...we LOVE college students. As a couple, we look more like Jesus because of them.
Spiritual stuff aside...
One of the other reasons I love, love, in a MAJOR way adore college girls is...
They are just so dang cool.
They know how to dress.
They know what to do with jewelry and bags and scarves.
And they can do all this on a tight budget. These are my kind of women. They can TJ Max, Ross and Thrift Store it up...just get out of their way. They aint afraid to dig in piles of clothes to find a treasure.
The Christian college girls in my life know how to look fabulous and still honor God with their clothing.
I love it.
They also know how to do incredible things with their hair.
They know how to do all the neat do's.
They know about hair products.
If you have a problem with your hair...have no fear...they have a hair product to fix it.
Many people are so quick to accept hair "issues."
What?
Don't do that!
Ask a college girl. There is NO hair problem they can't fix with a product from Walgreens.
Recently...I watched Kirby do the coolest thing with her hair.
She made it curly with her Chi.
Who knew.
I know Kirby isn't in college...but she became a permanent fixture in my life when she was in school, and now she has college girls in her life who teach her to do rock-star stuff with her hair.
I went home and tried what I saw Kirby doing.
I couldn't do it.
It was awful.
So, I stuck my chi in my purse. The next time I saw her, we were at a get together at someone's house.
I shoved her in the bathroom with me, and she taught me, letting me practice until I got it right.
I know this beautiful display of older and younger women coming together to learn from each other is probably making tears run down your face right now. :)
Isn't this every woman's dream?
Young women want to learn from older women how to pursue purity, holiness, be self controlled, love the Lord and their families...and well...
Older women want to learn how to stop looking stupid.
Younger women have taught me so many things...some of them I can't even talk about on this blog. They can only be talked about in private, but those things have revolutionized my life!
Another thing I did recently was make Ashlyn teach me how to wad my hair all crazy like on the top of my head.
Have you seen this look?
It's great.
She explained it to me.
She did it with my hair.
But then she went home.
I tried it myself this morning and well...
I'm close.
Close.
But not there.
So I emailed Katie Tucker this morning...one of the college girls who has that crazy cool hair wad thing down.
I'm going to get her to come over and show me how to do it ASAP.
I'm not going to let her leave until I can do it myself...perfectly messy and wonderful.
I also emailed another girl named Rebekah. She goes to my church, but I don't think she even knows me. I don't care! She has curly hair, and she does this brilliant thing with pins. She can do magic with bobby pins. I must learn how to do this. I must.
And so all this learning has inspired me.
What else do I want to know how to do?
I'm going to make a list.
And then, I'm going to ask people who know how to do those things to teach me how to do them.
Why haven't I thought of this before?
Why haven't I done this before?
Probably because as women we are awfully prideful. We don't want to admit we stink at some things and...that girl over there...she's a super hero...I hate her...but I want to be like her. Women are so weird, huh?
Well...I'm sick of that.
This isn't a competition. We're in this together. We need to learn from each other how to love God, love our children, love our husbands, be disciplined...and I also want to learn how to fix my hair like people on TV and know the fashion must haves this season...and know what hair product to buy from Walgreens to make my hair have some body, or quit frizzing...and I want to know how to use bobby pins (right now I don't know how to...I'm bobby pin stupid). I also want to know how to CVS, how to make a header like Kendra's, how to have smoky eyes and how to wear jewelry.
I'm starting with the hair.
I'm begging these girls to come over and getting them to show me how to put my hair on the top of my head AND pin it all whispy blowy. The best thing about all of these new styles is...
Your hair can be a disaster, and you can quickly do something to fix that!
This is one thing college women and moms have in common...there are times when we don't have a lot of time to make ourselves look good. Most of the time, I don't have time because I have a household of children running around trying to stick their tongues to frozen poles. College girls need to do their hair fast usually because they stayed up too late talking to their roommates, or chose sleep over beauty. Either way...they have found a way to survive, and they can share their brilliance with me!
Want to learn how to do the chi curly thing? I'll show you how!
Want to know how to do the messy hair on the top of your head look? I'll let you know when Katie agrees to come show me. She also knows how to do this great bang swoop...I want to know how to do that too.
How cute is she?
I stole this picture off her facebook page. Hee-hee!

Want to know how to do the "I'm so sexy with my curls pinned up all over the place" Rebekah look? I'll invite you over and beg her to show us!
If you want to learn...email me. Come over. We'll all sit in my bathroom together. I'm not kidding. Maybe we'll make a video tutorial.
What silly thing do YOU want to learn to do?
Maybe someone knows how to do it.
Maybe we all can learn it together!

Heather,
I'm going to swallow my pride and say that I need to learn too.
I have two looks: ponytail, and straight.
Where can you get a cheap chi? Can you compromise on this? Is there such a thing as an inexpensive, yet quality hair straightener?
I NEED help!
-Bekah
I've got to learn how to make my hair look curly with my chi!! Who knew you could do more than just straighten with that thing!
So proud of you for swallowing your pride.
Only good can come of it!
I have no idea how to answer these questions. Hopefully someone else on here can.
I know for me, my hair diva friends told me not to even bother with an off brand straightener because my hair is very curly...so it would need the power of the chi to conqueror my curls.
Those sweet friends all went in together and bought me one for my birthday a few years ago. How nice was that?
I'll email you when I have some hair teachers lined out!
Until then...someone help Bekah out about the straightener!
Heather
Hey!!!!!!! I want in!!!!!!!!
I need help!!!!!
I'll teach you Erin! We should have done it the other night!
Hey!
I love this. I recently learned to just drop my pride. I'm serious. If someone has cool hair or you love their jeans, just ask!
I tried looking up the Chi curly hair technique on you tube, but my attempts failed miserably. I really think you should be in a real life bathroom with someone who knows the skill.
One thing I do know- the CHI is superior in hair straighteners. It gets hotter than most all other hair straighteners thus making it the best at smoothing the hair and holding the curl. I've tried them all and have been using my CHI for 4 years now. Where were these when I was in high school?
I got Heather's at the beauty supply store (like where stylist get their stuff) in Bryan off of Highway 6 and William J. Bryan behind Dominoes. They have them for what the stylists pay there. Another good place is e-bay and Amazon. Oh, and HEB sells them too for 99.00. I saw them at ours in Brenham so I know they must have them there.
Let me know when you are fixing hair. I need some majah tips!
Love,
Lyns
I'm a college girls, but fashion is a foreign language i do NOT know...
I was at a girls house last night and a lady was selling designer purses for "cheap", which wasn't really cheap, but they all looked like ugly brown bags with C's all over them.
I know nothing about fashion or designer stuff or HAIR or anything. I just blow-dry my hair and put it in a pony tail.
I need help too.
it's sad that I have trendy girlfriends and am not trendy. Friends like blaire, who had to dress me for a job interview in august cuz i don't even own a pair of black pants.
Im getting married soon :) and I wanna be a HOT wife. so i need to take Hair and Fashion 101 asap.
please send me an invitation to these events :)
You can get a Chi herehttp://www.shopping.com/xPC-Farouk_Farouk_CHI_GF1001_1_Inch_Ceramic_Ionic_Flat_Iron_Hair_Straightener for about 70 Dollars...they are normally around 110. I would defiantly stick with the chi though. Make sure you also buy something that will prtect your hair from all the heat such as biosilk.
That picture is a good reminder of the wonderful fellowship and healing that has been brought in my life these past few years because those relationships.
...and i LOVE my Kirby Apel.
I want someone to teach me to make my hair look like Taylor Swifts. Stephen likes the long hair so I too am desperate for some new styles... and some easy ones too (hey I am still a mom of 2 toddlers!).
Hilarious. I thought for sure this was going to end up being a plea to get some older ladies for the upcoming Her Hands deal, but no, it's just about hair and getting it to do what you want it to.
I am right there in the same boat as Bekah... "I need to learn too." and Whitney... "I am a college girl, but fashion is a foreign language I do NOT know..."
This post... and the blue jeans post have taught me one thing... yes... I am a college student... well for two more days... and no... I am NOT cool OR trendy.
I used to have help in the fashion, trendy department... my roommate, Colleen, was constantly teaching me how to be cool and trendy. If it weren't for her... I would still have one eye brow! :) I didn't even know until college that girls plucked their eye brows... no one showed me... no one taught me. She taught me how to dress a little cool... but then she moved and took all her trendy clothes that I used to borrow with her. It was a sad day when her closet moved out.
So... I don't have much to teach in the fashion department... but I seriously need to learn... so I would love to come learn with everyone!
Crystal
This is Katie's mom! Thank you so much for pouring into the life of college girls. I understand about the hair thing. She is always fluffing my hair up in the back when she is home. I try . . just can't seem to get it! You are a blessing to Katie!
Heather and whoever else is interested, I would gladly show you how to work Photoshop/Gimpshop, to show you how to make cute headers, blogs, and cards. I hardly buy a card for anyone anymore because I can make them personalized on my computer and CHEAP! I have such a hard time spending 3.99 on a piece of cardstock that will get thrown away. Plus, everyone wants a cute blog. So, maybe we can schedule something...but it may have to be next month sometime.
I want to know how to be an expert with bobby pins. Does your hair have to be superthin and fine to do that?
I'm trying to think of more questions...
heather. i want in on this hair thing. seriously..you should have seen me on my wedding day (not only with hair but with makeup.but thats another day i suppose)...i was ridiculous. good thing one of my bridesmaids is roommates with katie tucker and learned from the best. :)
i wish i could poof/tease my hair to make it look like it has volume and not just thick and frizzy.
i also can't figure out that chi thing. i gave up a long time ago.
i can handle fashion (thanks to years of working retail)..or at least my husband thinks i can..but as for hair and makeup, i'm a dummy.
a dummy.
i've been wearing the same kind of eyeshadow since sophomore year of high school. i'm a senior in college. oops.
but in all seriousness, i'm in. bring it, tuck tuck. show me those hair tricks from arkansas. and learn some while you're in australia too.
Katie's Mom!
Wow!
You did some good work!
That girl is incredible...and not just because she has some of the coolest hair in town.
Heather
Wow! I cannot count how many times I have felt the exact same way, Heather. I want to ask, but didn't want to look foolish! (silly pride...)
I want to be in on the fun for sure! I had no idea so many other women felt the same way.
SO...yes, I have some issues also...how on earth do these girls get their hair to look all cute and messy and up (I too am bobby pin retarded). What's up with the cute scarf knot I keep seeing?
That list could go on for a while...but I'll just stop at...I NEED HELP TOO!
-Amy Snidow
I wanna come.
I know a little about hair fixin but far from a stylist and I am not a young full of spunk college gal that is up on hip-ness either-darn. I have really curly hair but wear it mostly straight. The Chi is worth the money. I purchased one off ebay a few months ago for about 70.00 including shipping. My girly girl, Claire (biracial), wants her hair "flat-ironed" daily. This is a big deal!! I have made a deal with her that we will do it straight a few days and then let it rest (curly in a pony tail) a few days. I would recommend Kendra as a protectant. I can fishtail and french braid as well.
If your wanting to "know how to CVS" means getting stuff for really cheap at the CVS pharmacy, then I am all about that...just today I saved 7.88, spent 3.77, and have ExtraBucks for 1.59 that can be used next time. If it means something else-whops! Otherwise, I will tune back in later for that episode. But, I wanna come to the wig fixin party. Melissa
I NEED to meet Rebekah and her bobby pins to do cute things to curly hair...hook me up!!!!
Hair night is going to be a hit!
Can't wait.
I'm predicting a lot of laughter and...I'm predicting some good old fashion pants wetting.
Heather
I want in!!... whenever you invite this other Rebekah over to show how to do cool things for curly haired girls let me know! :) My curly hair just drives me crazy most days! Also i want to know how to do this amazing curl thing with the chi! :) it sounds easy and I have tried it before but it didnt work... whatever I did was really wrong!
video hair night PLEEEEEEZ!!! Post it, I would love to have cute hair.. but live near Austin.....
sounds like so much fun!
how stinking fun is this?!
i want in! i love ALL of these things... and since i typically have zero problem just straight up asking people what/how/where/when questions, i have gotten some fantastic hair tips and general knowledge from my hair lady over the years! love her. (i'm telling you, there is a lot the common person doesn't know about hair stuff! those people go to school for a REASON. it's crazy!)
and i love scarves. :) and makeup!
and i want to learn more!
this has so much girly potential. i love it! count me IN.
oh and let me just throw this in too... having women in my life to mentor me and just let me in on their lives - that might be the most beautiful picture of the body of Christ i've ever been a part of. it's so wonderful!
I WANT in. I don't have curly hair, but I want pretty hair, lol.
You ladies can go to youtube and type "corioliss straightner and curls" and it will show you how to get curls with a flat iron. I bought my girls the flat iron in the mall and it does curls. It was actually a bit more pricey than the chi but then I saw it on ebay for like $25.00. Boy was I mad. The stand nows calls them "herstyler". I just typed in "herstyler and curls" and a video also popped up. Two of my girls now have the "herstyler" because they broke their corioliss and they exchanged them for me.
I nominate Emily Bruss to be on the panel! The girl has mad skills in all departments- hair, fashion, shoes, and make-up.
Love you Emily!
I won't be able to participate in the fashion discussions since I'm preggo- fashion is pretty much out the window when that happens.
You are doing that with your CHI!??!?! I am soooo in on hair night!
Lyns, you are a beautiful preggo!!
Kendra, I need to find out about photo shop...i have been struggling with Christmas cards the last couple nights!
Jessica Merchant showed me the chi curling thing. She is AWESOME too.
Amen to that Lyns!! I definitely need the hair help though! I'm about to enter the world of mommy hood, but I refuse to give up good fashion and hair! So count me in!
I bought my wife a CHI a year or two ago for Christmas and I was her hero.
My frugle wife was so worried that her non-frugle husband may have spent boo-ku bucks. But I didn't. I got it off e-bay for 69 or 79 dollars - something like that.
Be careful buying it off e-bay, because if you just search "Chi", many people include a generic straightener with some other Chi hair product... so be careful.
I am SOOOO COMING!
Here is who HAS to be there to help teach:
-Emily (she has tried and tried to teach me the "poof" but I am bobby pin stupid, too! I'm not leaving 'til I have it down.)
-Blaire...she also has this poof thing down...and I want her to teach me to accessorize.
-Katie Tucker...I just love her and her hair! (I think she does a good smokey eye, too??!) This girl can teach us how to do eye makeup for sure.
-Rebekah...she may have the prettiest curly hair that I've ever seen. I want to know what products she uses and every single tool and come over scrunch my hair for me.
One more thing, here's a chi for $58 with no tax...or shipping!
http://sassyfashionbags.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3378476
I bought mine from there a few months ago when mine Chi finally died.
Thank you "Anonymous". If I knew your name, I'd come over and give you a hug.
I'm currently wearing house slippers and Jason's shirt so I needed to hear that:).
Puh-leeeese do video tutorials! You have fans who have long since left college station (only to go to another college town in Michigan) and I need to know how to do the following:
-manage to look cute and pregnant (as in, no one can actually say "You should see the bags under your eyes sweetie". Ugh)
-wear glasses and not look like poo. So many girls wear glasses and look so cute! How do you do this?
-magic poof fine straight hair
-smokey eyes without looking like a man lady
If I lived anywhere near you, I'd so be there! I guess 5 hours is too far, right?!
I need in on hair night! I straighten it to go to church or somewhere special, I wear it in a ponytail at home all day, and I wash and go with the wavy look all the other times. I use Brynn's Chi, and I had to borrow Heather's recently because Brynn went out of town!
Count me in!
Melodi
I don't know what I would have done without mentors! We are never at a place where we can't be both the mentor and the mentoree (spell?)
I'm so glad that I am not the only hair challenged woman out there. I always joke with my husband that when we have kids, they had better be boys because I can't pass on my hair challenged genes unto girls...maybe I should just learn! I guess you're right, it is pride, and I feel like as a woman in her 20s, it is just something I am supposed to instinctively know so I feel silly for asking.
