We agree...parenting should be mostly training, with the occasional reaction.
Before we started training our kids, parenting for us was mainly a never ending reaction.
They did something "bad". We reacted.
Training means we teach them the right behavior during a time when they aren't misbehaving.
I will also say...
I love the Piper, Mahaney types.
I love their constant reminder to parent with grace and the gospel in mind.
I love how they teach us to pursue godliness, and teach our kids to pursue those things too.
But...to be completely honest...
They talk in ways that sound odd to me.
When I was listening to this talk, I thought..."This is all great stuff. We do most of this. I needed that reminder to be more consistent in several areas. I love the reminder and encouragement."
But I also thought...
I don't talk to my kids this scholarly. We teach them the meaning of words like sin, sanctification, repentance...but we don't use those words as often as this guy uses them when talking casually to our kids.
So, for young moms and dads who spend time around here...
I give a hearty Amen to all the things taught in this message.
However, you also know...we don't sound like this guy when we're disciplining our kids.
We talk to them in the same way we always talk to them...a little more casually than it sounds like this guy talks to his kids.
Hopefully, if you were freaked out by the personality, you can move past that and hear all the wisdom and truth he shares from God's word.
I am way past parenting 101 or any parenting and I have no grandchildren, but I wish they had had more on parenting when mine was growing up. Today there is so much available.
