So When We're Asked to Give An Answer...
If you're out and about over the next few days, the topic of the earthquake is bound to come up.
Although tragic, things like earthquakes can lead to great conversations with people who do not know the Lord (and shucks...people who do).
I honestly don't have time to do a lot of research for great articles and thoughts on such devastating world events. Thankfully there are incredible college women in my life who do. I've already thanked them profusely this morning for keeping this mom in the know.
I love college students for many reasons, but one of those reasons is how aware of cultural events and social justice they are. What a blessing young women are to older women. They keep me informed and bless me often by the research they do.
I wanted to pass on two great articles that I think go so well while thinking, praying and talking about the earthquake in Haiti.
It's important for us as believers to know how to think in a biblical way about these events so that we can participate in conversations with others who are processing this tragedy. I'm looking forward to God bringing opportunities in the near future to share truth (hopefully humbly) from His Word and His perspective about horrible tragedy like we see in Haiti.
Thanks again Rachel and Meredith for the articles!
Praying for Haiti...but also for many great gospel-centered conversations in classrooms, with neighbors, our children, soccer moms, and school teachers.
Both of these are from the Desiring God website:
When and Why the Earthquake in Turkey (this one was written in 1999, but is so relevant to the things going on in Haiti as well).
Ten Aspects of God's Sovereignty Over Suffering and Satan's Hand in it.

Thanks for posting this Heather.
I feel like this natural disaster has stirred something more in people than usual. I mean there have been numerous tsunamis pretty recently and my heartstrings were not pulled as they are with this disaster. I'm not saying that's okay, it is just the truth. Brock and I were both talking about how usually when something like this happens we feel bad, turn the other way, and continue on with our lives. But something is different this time. We have more compassion and a stronger sense of wanting to "do". I feel like this has been a lot of peoples reaction.
I don't know why this one matters so much. For me personally, I think it's only been in the last year that the Lord has been opening my eyes to things going on outside of our country (or my neighborhood is probably more like it.) Maybe God is doing a bigger work throughout the global church.
I also think I have more people in my life right now who bring these things to my attention. The people I love care about these things, so I care about them and get to be informed.
I think for me, all those ingredients in my life recently have caused me to care more (or heck, even know about things like these).

Thanks for posting these articles!
The same thoughts have been going through my head as well. Why is this one different? My heart was broken yesterday for the people of Haiti, I felt sick for them.
Matt and I felt the same way as the Birks last night. We have more compassion this time and want to help in any small way we can.
I'm thankful that the Lord is opening my eyes to see outside of my neighborhood and my little comfortable life.
Erin
