Sit a Spell Lite

Whew. I need a break from the serious.

It's either write about this fun new find, or dive right into brain blowing thoughts.

I'll wait on those.

Instead, I give you this....

Not long ago we were watching Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

Pretty much the dumbest movie that has ever been made.

Of course our kids absolutely loved it.

They have terrible taste when it comes to movies. We've tried to work on this, but nothing changes. The more "are you kidding me" a movie is, the more they like it, which means "movie night" at our house will find kids laughing their heads off and Aaron and I rolling our eyes at each other. Good thing these boys are so sweet and cuddly. Their warm, lovable bodies are the only reason I stay on the couch.

At one point in the movie, Rick Ignoramous pulls out a record.

Immediately, the boys said..."WHOA...look at that huge DVD!"

It was bound to happen.

At some point in your life it seems like the only reason your kids exist is to put you in incredibly awkward moments or make you feel really old.

The time Hayden grabbed a lady's butt at HEB = awkward moment.

Realizing my kids have never seen a record = "I'm old" moment.

We paused the movie and told them that a long time ago, all we had to listen to were records. No DVD's. No MP3 players. No Itunes.

They were horrified.

They may not have great taste in movies, but thanks to their dad they make up for it with their excellent taste when it comes to music.

Then we went back to the movie containing lots of shrinking and high bangs.

Not gonna lie. If I didn't love God, I would totally have divorced my husband if he shrunk my kids. Okay...maybe not the first time he did it, but definitely after he blew up my kids or turned one of them into a giant Godzilla baby, our marriage would have so been over.

Does the thought of sweaty tweens swimming in your cereal make anyone else want to gag? They were wearing their tennis shoes. I'm not sure why that made it more gross to me but it did.

A couple days later I told the boys about my favorite records growing up...

Mickey Mouse Disco

Mickey Mouse Splashdance

And you better believe I knew every beat, every word, every note of this record.

Not long after telling the kids all about how I would dance around my room singing "Mickey, She's Got a Crush on You (She's got a rush)" LOUDLY into a wooden spoon microphone, lo and behold I found the coolest record website online.

Kiddie Records Weekly

These albums are not as cool as the 80's Mickey Mouse varieties, but this site has old records you can listen to online. These albums are classics...like Dr. Seuss, Casey at the Bat, and Woody Woodpecker. So fun!

I started thinking how maybe it's a lost art to hear a story and have to make up your own "movie" in your mind.

So part of school every day for the last few weeks has been "record time"...the time when I force my kids to close their eyes and imagine their own movies.

The boys take turns picking out one of the old records, sit back, relax and listen.

Now that I just found my favorite old records online, I'm wondering if I have forgotten any.

Anyone else have favorite records you remember listening to when you were little? I'm in the mood for some nostalgia.

Andy actually just got me a (much desired) record player for Christmas and we've been having the best time browsing half price and finding so many fun, old albums.

I don't actually remember if we listened to it on record or not when I was little (my parents had one sitting in the living room, but as far back as I can remember it sat there broken)... but the Beach Boys.

I still love the Beach Boys when I clean my house (my mom used to pump up the music while she and my brother and I cleaned the house floor to ceiling).

Another is musical soundtracks that we'd listen to at my grandparents house: My Fair Lady, the Sound of Music, etc. etc.

Anyways, records are so fun, huh?

I had bullfrogs and butterflies.

And that reminds me...I had this other one that had this song on it called Kids of the Kingdom.

"We are K-O-K kids...Kids of the Kingdom."

I also remember some Gaither kids record. I bet it was pretty lame, but I loved it.

I had the Smurfs with Pink Toothbrush and other great songs! And for some reason, I had the Super Man soundtrack on record and I actually listened to it!
