The Goat Who Came to Spring Break

"We have a goat!" the boys run in excited to tell us.  "Oh really?"  We're not as excited as they are.  We follow the boys outside.  They act like Santa left them a pet.  Aaron and I stand staring at the goat.  Looking around.  Whose goat is this?  We laugh.  Only first time visitors ask about the goats.  We sound like we just got off the plane yesterday.

All day Hudson must run outside to check to see that the goat has not gone away.  He would be devastated.  His parents would be relieved.  Whose goat is this?  We find ourselves looking out the window.  Wondering.  Who brought this goat to campus and tied it up next to our house?

The rain.  It starts.  Hard.  Heavy.   Loud on our tin roof.  Buckets everywhere.  Water.  Falling.  This leaky house.  Will I ever get used to water making its way inside?  As though it's been invited.  The rain relentlessly shows up.  Merry making.  Unaware that it's an unwanted guest.

In bed.  The Kindle in my hand.  Trying to read.  Soothed by my cool sheets and the pounding, pounding, pounding of the rain.  Like the feet of fans on metal bleachers.  It pounds.  But I can't read.

I traipse down the hall to find the person in this house who fields all complaints.

"You have to make it stop.  I can't take it.  That goat.  It's crying.  Like a baby.  A real baby.  In the rain."

"You want me to go into the rain and move the goat?"

"It makes me sad.  The sound of it."

Aaron lets out a long sigh.  He knows.  The goat must go.  He must get wet.

This dang goat.

By today we've decided to embrace the kid.  So welcome goat.  Way to rock Spring Break Week of Awesomeness.

Could it have really been Spring Break Week of Awesomeness: Haiti version without a goat?

Do goats wander like stray dogs? And are you going to keep him?

When I was in Haiti every time we were woken up by goats, and I swear they were saying my name. "Beeeeettttthhhh. Beeeeeeettttttthhhhh." Gotta love 'em.

Zoanna...

Yes. Goats. Pigs. Chickens. Dogs. They are everywhere in Haiti.

I'm not sure whose goat this is, but it belongs to someone.

Hopefully we find out soon.

So funny. I was just in the bathroom trying to fix my hair without electricity (always fun). I heard the goat and it DOES sound like it's saying "Beeetttth!"

Whoa! I've been away for one measly weekend and I totally miss the Spring Break Week of Awesomeness kick off!?! I love this idea. And I've been reading you. For a while. How have I missed this?

I know what you mean about the goat. They do sound like crying babies. So creepy.

But I must confess...I love goats.

Our goat just had three kids. I went out one morning and said, "Look! She's kidding!"

They are really cute. You're welcome to come see them before they get too big. Maybe it will help you through your goat issues. Or not.
