The Lost Day of Spring Break Week of Awesomeness

The girl (Hannah) who let me jack her SD card while at the orphanage on Monday night emailed me the pics from the popcorn/movie night.

Somehow John McHoul became the proud owner of a popcorn machine.  Like the cool kind they have at the movies or creepy carnivals.  We borrowed that sucker and took it to the orphanage.  We were greatly entertained by popcorn popping.  I'm sure this says something big about our new lives here in Haiti.

Ice Age was projected on the wall.  Watching a movie about ice in Haiti is a little weird.

The kids needed constant reassurance that the saber tooth lion was not going to eat the baby.

I had not watched Ice Age in years.  It was emotional for me to watch it with the kids from the orphanage.  The themes of the movie are "being in a herd" where you're loved, cared for, and protected.  Like being in a family.  The entire underlying story is about the animals trying to return a human baby to his father who is searching wildly to find his son.  Non-traditional families.  Restoration.  Being loved.  Belonging.  All beautiful themes.  Watching a movie about "family" and about a child being reunited with the people he loves brought about a lot of sadness as I thought about these kids and so many like them in Haiti.  They seemed to love the movie, but we came home hurting over this broken world where kids will grow up without a family. There is no one looking for them, waiting for them, or searching desperately to find them.  That's reality.  That's the truth.  We hate it.  Come lord Jesus, come.

Did they have Ice Age in Creole?

How cool that you were able to let these kiddos kick back and have some fun. :)

One note of consolation: The kids probably didn't catch the underlying messages that hit your heart so profoundly. But, I'm with you, "Come, Lord Jesus." There's too much suffering here.

You're right, Heather, that is truly heartbreaking. Jesus, protect those kids. Bring them someone who WANTS them. Help them to feel wanted, even now. I know your visits are SOOOOOO good for them! Who knows how that will influence them for the future.

I cannot agree with you more that this earth needs Jesus to come fix it as soon as possible. But I see something beautiful in the message of Ice Age for these children. If I remember correctly (and it has been awhile since I've seen Ice Age) at the end of the movie, yes the child goes back to his family, but think about the animals- the sloth, the tiger and the mammoth. They are outcasts, misfits, no one wants them. but when they find each other, they are no longer alone, they are a family. and it may not be a typical family or tribe, but they say that they are a family. they love each other and protect each other. I say this because I have seen in my life that an orphanage can be the family that a child needs. No it won't look like a typical family, but God is capable of taking something in this broken, screwed up world and redeeming it into something good. I just hope that safe orphanages will grow and become the families that these children need. They may not look like a typical family, but that doesn't make them any less of one. I love your blog!! God bless!!
