Ashton on Turning the Other Cheek
Ashton walks into the living room where Aaron and I are sitting and says, "If someone hits you, it's fine to hit them back, knock them to the ground and then help them up, right?"
Uh...no. Ashton was disappointed. "No. I said...you help them up." He really wanted the help them up part to make the retaliation okay.
Real quick we interjected with another question...
"Did you hit someone?" Ashton paused, took a second, thought through why we would ask him if he punched someone and then said..."Oh. No. I didn't hit anyone."
The mother in the room probably let out an audible sigh.
Aaron told Ashton that really, the Bible says if someone hits you that you should turn the other cheek. "If someone hits you on the right side of the face, then turn and offer them the left side of the face."
Ashton felt like he was getting this. He said, "So if someone hits you on the right side of the face, you can hit them back on the left side of their face?"
Uh...no. Aaron went to work explaining Jesus' words a little better.
Ashton is a thinking man so after some discussion and some long, thought-filled pauses Ashton concluded. "That's crazy."
Yep. Jesus says some crazy stuff.
Luke 6:29
If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.
As I was tucking Ashton into bed I made sure...just one last time...
"Are you sure there's not someone at school you're wanting to punch?"
He was a little offended. "What? No. Mom......No. I was just wondering."
Jesus and seven year old boys. I may never understand them.

I love that little boy. He is adorable times a million. Please leave him with us for the summer. Oh. wait. Not enough fans. Scratch that.
;)
Oh. That boy.
This is like a conversation I've had with Buddy lots of times. About Jesus telling us to put others (read:sister) first. He's not feeling it. That's just crazy talk. And the thing is, I get it. It's so unnatural. So...hard.
ps- tell Mrs. Livesay that there is no way she gets to keep this boy this summer. He's coming to us! And my kid's are very excited! ; )
I used to read a lot of blogs. I think I was addicted to many. During the season of Lent I gave them all up - except for your blog. Your posts are hilarious, thought provoking, challenging, encouraging and just darned interesting to read. I admire you as a wife, mom, midwife in the training, and follower of Christ. I particularly enjoy the way that you write....and if we lived in the same city I bet we would be friends.
Keep writing!!
Blessings....
Since we've spent this week dealing with the death of a friend and then the creeps who have since robbed her house - not once, but TWICE - I'm gonna have to agree with Ashton.
That "other cheek" stuff is crazy.
Right now, I'd love to punch the vultures out. Not sure if I'd help them up again or not.
Thanks so much for my smile of the day.
I love kids :)
I have three boys and it's so hard for even adults to accept this truth, let alone little ones. I commend you for how you are raising your children to love others, even when they hurt us. It's a hard message to teach. I'm still trying. Still trying to live it myself : )
Interesting point - we figure helping someone after will justify it...I don't think so. HE is adorable.
